Approximation Schemes for Covering and Packing in the Streaming Model

چکیده
The shifting strategy, introduced by Hochbaum and Maass [10], and independently by Baker [1], is a unified framework for devising polynomial approximation schemes to NP-Hard problems. This strategy has been used to great success within the computational geometry community in a plethora of different applications; most notably covering, packing, and clustering problems [2, 5, 7, 8, 9]. In this paper, we revisit the shifting strategy in the context of the streaming model and develop a streaming-friendly shifting strategy. When combined with the shifting coreset method introduced by Fonseca et al. [6], we obtain streaming algorithms for various graph properties of unit disc graphs. As a further application, we present novel approximation algorithms and lower bounds for the unit disc cover (UDC) problem in the streaming model, for which currently no algorithms are known. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.2.2 Nonnumerical Algorithms and Problems

Nonstandard finite difference schemes for differential equations
In this paper, the reorganization of the denominator of the discrete derivative and nonlocal approximation of nonlinear terms are used in the design of nonstandard finite difference schemes (NSFDs). Numerical examples confirming then efficiency of schemes, for some differential equations are provided. In order to illustrate the accuracy of the new NSFDs, the numerical results are compared with ...

In this paper, three types of (philosophical, optimistic and pessimistic) multigranulation single valued neutrosophic (SVN) covering-based rough set models are presented, and these three models are applied to the problem of multi-criteria group decision making (MCGDM).Firstly, a type of SVN covering-based rough set model is proposed.Based on this rough set model, three types of mult...
متن کاملA Dense Hierarchy of Sublinear Time Approximation Schemes for Bin Packing
The bin packing problem is to find the minimum number of bins of size one to pack a list of items with sizes a1, . . . , an in (0, 1]. Using uniform sampling, which selects a random element from the input list each time, we develop a randomized O( n)(log log n) ∑n i=1 ai +( 1 2 ) 1 2 ) time (1+2)approximation scheme for the bin packing problem. We show that every randomized algorithm with unifo...
متن کاملAPPROXIMATION OF STOCHASTIC PARABOLIC DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS WITH TWO DIFFERENT FINITE DIFFERENCE SCHEMES
We focus on the use of two stable and accurate explicit finite difference schemes in order to approximate the solution of stochastic partial differential equations of It¨o type, in particular, parabolic equations. The main properties of these deterministic difference methods, i.e., convergence, consistency, and stability, are separately developed for the stochastic cases.
متن کاملBiorthogonal wavelet-based full-approximation schemes for the numerical solution of elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication problems
Biorthogonal wavelet-based full-approximation schemes are introduced in this paper for the numerical solution of elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication line and point contact problems. The proposed methods give higher accuracy in terms of better convergence with low computational time, which have been demonstrated through the illustrative problems.
